Real Richmond Wedding: Lexi and Scott at The Boathouse at Rocketts Landing

October 1, 2016

How They Met:
Lexi and Scott met at the local hospital near JMU. Lexi was working as a nursing aide when Scott did a rotation on her unit while he was studying to become a Physicians Assistant. The first time Scott asked Lexi out, she obliviously declined. Lexi explains, “I just started telling him about my weekend plans, completely oblivious!” The two later reconnected on social media, where he asked her out on a second date. Their first date was tubing down the James River. “He was supposed to drive me back to my car when we were done, but we ended up going out to dinner and hanging out the rest of the night!” And the two have been hanging out ever since.

The Proposal:
Scott asked Lexi to be his wife while they were on vacation in the Bahamas in June 2012. “We had just gone to dinner and he asked if I wanted to walk down the beach.” Just like his first attempt at a date, Lexi originally declined as she was in a “food coma.” Eventually, she gave in and he got down on one knee on the beach. “I ugly cried and forgot to say yes before I took the ring, but I eventually said yes!”

The Details:
The couple picked The Boathouse at Rocketts Landing because of the scenery. “I can’t put into words how much we love this city and couldn’t imagine a better backdrop than our city skyline and The James…where we had our first date!” The Boathouse at Rocketts Landing also made it easy because it was a one-stop shop. “There is a ceremony location, reception space, food, booze, tables, chairs, linens etc.”

While they didn’t necessarily have a theme, the two settled on Beyonce, Beer, and Bulldogs. “Scott surprised me with Beyonce themed vows that were AMAZING!” The two also surprised their guests with a choreographed first dance to “Love on Top”

They used their favorite beer bottles as their centerpieces. “My Grandma’s name is Evelyn, so the Evelyn bottle from Hardywood was at her table. Boozy Mother from Isley was at my mom’s table.”

Finally, Lexi and Scott’s English Bulldogs, Hank and Helga, were their ring bearer and flower girl. “We would never have had a wedding without our dogs!” They even made cardboard cutouts of their dogs so Hank and Helga could continue to party with them for the entire night.

Their colors were mostly neutrals, with pops of navy and yellow, a nod to Scott’s home state, Michigan.  By the time their guests were finished with their dinner, they had no other “wedding tasks” except to PARTY. “Our guests joined us at the end of our surprise first dance and then we stayed on the dance floor for the rest of the night.”

Favorite Part of the Day:
“My absolute favorite part of the day was when Scott read his vows.” A snippet of his vows: ” I promise to always keep the beer fridge full, to support your bulldog obsession, to join in on the random dance parties, to take goofy pictures and of course, to keep your ‘love on top’ until the ‘end of time.'”

Scott’s favorite part? Having all of their close friends and family together at once.

Biggest Challenge:
“Guestlist. We wanted to keep our wedding small and we really just wanted to have our closest family and friends.”

Best Piece of Advice:
“Your wedding is about you and your fiance getting married. Don’t worry about everyone else. Plan a wedding that when you look back on the day you think, ‘there is nothing I would’ve done differently. YOLO!”
